Police has banned prayers organized by the parliamentary Imam for not seeking permission from the Uganda Muslim council, the governing body for Muslim faith.

CP Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson said in a statement this morning, that the National Jumaa special prayers that were to be held at Kololo Independence grounds would not take place, advising the organizer to sort their issues with the UMC.

He says only UMC is mandated to oversee all activities of the Islamic faith in the country. Enanga further cautioned the organizers against proceeding with the religious event without security clearance and the potential safety concerns in the wake of the recent incidents in the neighboring Kenya.

“We want to reassure members of the Muslim community and the public at large, that all other prayers on this major day of the Muslim calendar will proceed without any security concerns, as we await any other request that is in full compliance with the provisions of the Public Order Management Act, Section 5.
